Choosing Wall Colours That Work Well With Your Art Collection - Harmonious and Complimentary Colour Combos
The art and colours that you choose for your home make a huge difference to how you feel in it. A lot of people find it difficult to choose wall colours because they second guess themselves and light can dramatically change how a colour looks. Art can really help when selecting a palette for your home.
In this article, I will take you through 2 ways to choose colours and art for your walls. Whether you start with the artwork or the colour, harmonious or complimentary combinations can set a very different tone for the space.
I’m going to show you the difference each approach makes with same art on different coloured walls
Harmonious Combinations
Harmonious colours are those which sit nest to each other in the spectrum or on the colour wheel. They usually result in a calm environment because they sit so comfortably next to each other having one tone in common. For example, green is made my mixing blue and yellow so the three colours are connected - a family of colours. Choosing a wall colour that sits harmoniously with a cool green toned artwork. It could be another kind of green (not too close or you’ll lose the impact altogether) or a cool blue or yellow. Here are some examples with ‘A Scent on the Breeze’.
Complimentary Combinations
The use of complimentary colour combos is great for adding energy to a space. Complimentary colours are those that are the opposite on the colour wheel - purple and yellow, blue and orange or red and green.
‘A Scent on the Breeze’ has mainly blue and green as the base colours so here are mock ups showing it on high contrast walls of red and orange. You’ll notice that the feel of the room totally changes…
Saturation levels matter just as much as the colour you use. Pale colours really pop against dark walls and vice versa. Similarly, washy pastel tones are happiest together creating airy atmospheres and deep jewel tones create a cosy feel.colours
