The Magic of Gardens Represented in Works of Art

Gardens in have long been featured in great works of art. Monet created a plethora of work centred around his favourite garden at Giverny and the waterlilies that he captured in his signature style have become iconic alongside the sunflowers and irises of Van Gogh.

Van Gogh is so adored now that there’s a whole travelling immersive experience dedicated to his work. People love his paintings because of their energy and the way he captures movement and colour. They’re not photographic but they translate the emotions he felt in each place.

Forth Lane in Newcastle upon Tyne has been transformed into a mural alley. This is a space that was dark and urban in nature but has been turned into a sliver of colour and an ode to gardens. The colours and childlike innocence of the painting brings a happy tone to what could otherwise be an intimidating corner of the city.

In early 2025, The Laing showed a retrospective of Nerys Johnson, former curator at the gallery and artist in her own right. She overcame the barriers of disability and made art even in hospitals. Despite the stark whiteness of her surroundings, she created vibrant floral paintings.

Gardens represent joy, discovery and mystery - literature has captured this in the likes of The Secret Garden and Alice in Wonderland. Young girls find fantastical flora and fauna as well as hope, imagination and more. The gardens feel like safe spaces and such places stay long in our memories.

I have been creating work focussed on happy places for years and have dipped my toes into florals both in linocut and monotype print. The colours and organic shapes draw me in and they leave memory traces of their scent and where you saw each bloom. Chrysanthemum from stately home gardens swaying in the breeze in bright colours to roses lining manicured beds and an abundance of hibiscus in every colour draped over the apartments on holiday in Spain.

Over the course of spring summer 2026, I have built up a collection called The Childhood Garden. It celebrates all of those magical gardens and parks that punctuated my youth and stimulated my imagination. The 11 pieces in the collection feature lambs’ ear, fuchsia, clematis, popped, magical archways and imposing trees - all the ingredients for a wonderful day of play.

The Childhood Garden previews on 25th September 2026 and launches to the public the following day.
